How to Never Get FIRED!

Do you want to ensure that you never get fired?

Do you want to ensure that your income never stops if you happen to be laid off?

Imagine a life where you can always take care of your family regardless of whatever someone else (like your boss or company, chairman, prime minister, president) decides about your career.

Make a list of all the reasons that you would want to ensure that you never lose income.

 Regardless of the level you are in an organisation, you have the potential to be FIRED.

This is a hard truth but you don't have to be that vulnerable to decisions outside of your control.

I became a C-Suite Executive at the age of 30 and had a really good career in HR and Business. At 38 I decided to leave the corporate world and start my on consulting and then coaching business.

Then one of my very first clients when I started consulting had a very good opportunity and I felt it was a good situation to more effectively utilise what I had learnt in consulting for five years in an organisation. Its a game changer when managers and leaders can take a consultant perspective to their organisation instead of getting 'caught up' in the organisational politics.

 I gave myself a maximum of two years as I knew that I had a bigger mission to fulfill in life than I could ever achieve in the corporate world.

I was able to remodel my coaching and consulting business so that it did not require much of my time so I was able to do it outside of the typical office hours (very early mornings, late evenings and weekends) while maintaining a full time job.

Everything was going fine, I was able to perform well (according to my performance evaluations) at my full time job and coach my executive clients. It worked well as most of my executive clients were doing coaching privately with me, so it suited them to do it outside of working hours as well.

With 6 months to go in my two years, I realised that I was not where I wanted to be in structuring my coaching and consulting business so I hired a coach to give me a 'kick up the assets' as she put it, to get me back on track to meeting my goals.

Then one day, August 17, 2017 I was FIRED. It was totally unexpected and I was furious. I was called in, given my letter and 30 minutes to pack my stuff and leave.

I cried. My family cried. We were angry.

We cried not because we were going to lose income but by the manner it was done and who did it. It was part of a mission to clear out the executive team who were earning more than some board members were comfortable with and worse yet part of a plan to protect a chairman accused of sexual harassment.

So the thought was 'who are these scumbags to fire me and blemish my long outstanding career?'.

My wife said that as much as she was infuriated by what happened she was glad that I was out of that toxic environment and she knew we would be okay.

Are you in a toxic environment? Why are you sticking around? To pay the bills? Good reason, but you can still build your business part time.

Thank god I was working with my coach and I had my plan to expand even more globally. After the termination in August I did trainings in India in September, London and Toronto and in October and Bali in November.

My coach was important in pushing me forward and I recalled what she said - 'you got kicked out of the nest so you can fly'.

So while I was FIRED, I had a plan for my business and so I say that the best time to start your own business is while you have a job.

 The surest way to never get fired is to build your own business.
